What to do in Sóller & Puerto de Sóller | Mallorca
Sóller and Puerto de Sóller are two different towns at the Northwest of Mallorca and offer a good chance to disconnect from beach plans. While the south and east of Mallorca are famous for their sandy beaches, vineyards and resorts, the north and Sierra Tramuntana contrasts with mountains and old cute towns.
Perhaps Sóller doesn’t have the same vibe at Valldemossa or Deià but honestly, it is a better place for accommodation options and is a good “base” to drive to the other towns around.
Find below some ideas about what to do in Sóller and Puerto de Sóller and let’s see if the visit is worth it!

Where is Sóller
Sóller and Puerto de Sóller are located in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana, in the center north of the island. Sóller was an isolated town until the end of the 19th century, when a train was built connecting the town with Palma de Mallorca. The rails are still there and trains are working!
Sóller is inland while Puerto de Sóller works as a port for the town, separated by only 3 km. The two towns are connected by road and a super cute tram that is a must to ride.
Where to Stay in Sóller
Sóller and Puerto de Sóller are great for spending at least one day. Sóller is the biggest town in the area, next to Deià, Valldemossa or Fornalutx, and we would recommend using Sóller as the main location for visiting these other towns and places in the region. We stayed one night in the cute Ca’s Cucanti, a small cozy hotel with excellent services and location.
What to do in Sóller
While small compared to Palma for example, Sóller has a bunch of options to explore.
Take the train to Palma or Puerto de Sóller
I’m going to mention this one first because talking about Sóller is a synonym of its train or tram. Once there, you’ll see constant trams that pass trough the main plaza. The classical aesthetics and the sounds are so unique and really add some charm to the town. Every few minutes or so there are both trains or trams going to Palma (25 €) or Puerto de Sóller (8 €). Check the official website for more info. We absolutely recommend trying the experience.
Base for hiking
We saw tons of backpackers and hikers. We didn’t do long hikes in Mallorca because we were quite active in Valencia but Sierra de Tramuntana does have A LOT of hikes to offer. Many people use Sóller as a base for the hikes or as a trekking stop.
Eat something at the plaza
This may seem obvious but there is a reason why if you search Sóller in Google Images, the results show you this scene. That plaza reflects Sóller’s essence, with the church, the tram, the buildings around… It’s a perfect place to have some food and people-watch. Don’t expect Michelin restaurants there and go for the safe options.
Admire the modernist Iglesia de San Bartolomé
Probably the most famous building in Sóller, the Church of San Bartolomé has a mix of baroque and modernist style. The facade, designed by Gaudi’s disciple Joan Rubió I Bellver in 1904 is a wonderful piece of art, worthy of admiration.
Funny info: if you’re there in the morning, maybe you can see an old man painting the facade of the church. He seems to be very busy painting an oil on canvas picture but… He’s pretending he’s painting! He rarely uses the paints and he does not paint. He tries to sell the pictures to tourists who don’t know that the pieces are false.
Do an orange tour 🍊
Did you know that Sóller is also known for its delicious oranges? Thanks to the Mediterranean weather and conditions, tons of oranges grow there. The company Ecovinyassa offers 15 € tours to the orange fields, with a 2 hours duration and snack and orange juice included. All the info in their web. Online reservation is mandatory.
Chill around the streets in oldtown
Don’t hesitate. Grab an ice-cream in Ca’n Pau Gelats Artesans or Gelat Soller and walk around the streets near the main plaza. Buy a pair of traditional Mallorca shoes, go check the train timetables, take a look at the restaurants… No rush, you’re on vacation!
What to do in Puerto de Sóller
If you take the tram or a taxi to Puerto de Sóller, you’ll be (for us) in the cutest port in Mallorca. Puerto de Sóller is a tiny town around a shell shape beach, that has lots of restaurants along a nice promenade.
Enjoy an amazing sunset
If you’re lucky, you can get an amazing sunset there. Boats, the beach and cute houses make Puerto de Sóller a postal-card view. Either with friends laying on the sand having a snack, or walking with your parter or family along the paseo, will make for a good memory. We arrived at the port with the tram at golden hour, and the light and atmosphere was simply perfect.
Visit the marina
With nice boats and clear waters, walking around the marina is another must-do in Puerto de Sóller. Who has never dreamt of having a boat and sailing the ocean?
Treat yourself with quality seafood
In contrast with Sóller, the Puerto area has tons of good restaurants. There are dozens of options and prices, so have a look at them before you sit by the sea. We had a magnificent dinner at Brises del Mar restaurant.
Our verdict of Sóller and Puerto de Sóller
If you are going to visit the north of the island (that you should) you won’t regret spending one full day in this area, since there are quite a few things to do. Soooo, visit Sóller and its puerto if you can!
