Ready for your next hike including a cool waterfall? Cascada del Río Carbo in Villahermosa del Río is a hidden waterfall in Comunidad Valenciana. The path goes from the little town of Villahermosa del Río in Castellón, in the middle of nowhere and brings you to a wonderful waterfall where you can swim (in super cold waters).
Basic info on Río Carbo Waterfall hike
The hike may seem effortless in some blogs but it’s not a joke in summer on a hot, sunny day.
Distance | 13 km in and out. There are maps along the route that indicate 4 km/each way, but that’s false! |
Duration | Estimate 2h each way with some stops. 4 hours in total + the time you spend at the waterfall |
Terrain | Mainly flat with some ups and downs towards the end. The path is mainly exposed to the sun and because of this, the difficulty goes up. Bring trainers or trail shoes. |
Route Type | In and out |
Difficulty | Hard in summer, easy otherwise. Bring a minimum of 2 litres/person of water. There is only one small accommodation/restaurant on the way and it may be closed. |
When to go | We would say June/ September if you want to swim. Skip July-August. But feel free to go whenever. |

Explaining the route to the Rio Carbo Waterfall in Comunidad Valenciana
Starting the hike to the waterfall
The route starts in Villahermosa del Río, a secluded small town in the middle of Castellón. The area is famous thanks to Penyagolosa Mountain, the highest in the province. There are routes to its top that start from this town too and it’s an excursion we’d love to do in the winter.
After parking in Villahermosa (there are tons of places to leave the car), put on your shoes and bring water to start the hike. To find the beginning of the trail you can ask locals where to start or just follow Google Maps or a GPS track.
Following the river Carbo
Once on the paved path, you’ll see a map with info about the route (fake info about the distance btw) and after some meters, you will start walking following a river for one kilometre or so. This river will be with you throughout parts of the hike and towards the end. It has different pools where you can swim if you’d like.
The path goes up and down but it has zero technical difficulty. It can be done with kids. The main problem as we said, is the sun if it’s a hot day since there is no shade.
More or less in the middle of the hike, you’ll pass by the small hotel Masia Roncales which organises activities and serves as a rural hotel. They sold us some Aquarius when we were exhausted and out of water on our way back. They can also prepare some food if you order in advance.
Heading to Rio Carbo Waterfall in Comunidad Valenciana
From this part, there are some flat kilometres until you reach El Pozo Negro, a fresh pool where you can swim or keep going to the end of the route which is close. After this pool, the path starts to get steep and seems like a never-ending path of dirt. I’m not going to lie, we were desperate to see the final waterfall because we thought this hike was much shorter when we started!
From El Pozo Negro, only 30 minutes separate you from this waterfall in Comunidad Valenciana. We passed by another pool (without a name) and I think it’s even better than the waterfall to swim and relax. Anyways, once near the Cascada de Rio Carbo, you will hear a strong noise coming from the jet of the waterfall. Think that in some minutes you can be there swimming if you don’t mind COLD AF waters (we did swim!) where you can enjoy a break with epic views.
Cascada del Río Carbo is a nice plan for exploring the area around Castellon and swimming in the clean pools is a plus. What we regret is going there on a terribly hot day, not bringing enough water and probably more food to chill more at the waterfall. But thanks to the experience, we learned something this time 🙂
Coming back to Villahermosa del Río
Of course to come back, since this is an in-and-out route, we had to retrace our steps. But after chilling at the waterfall I’m sure you’ll have the motivation to do it. In addition, the way back is easier going “down”.
