Probably you have seen this idyllic lake in Instagram, or maybe you are already considering Slovenia as your next destination. Whichever the case, let us introduce you to the wonderful Lake Bled in Slovenia.
Bled is a small town in Slovenia, known for its marvellous Lake Bled, beautiful surroundings, and things to do. When I plan our trips, I always check Google Images before to see if it is worth the visit. Bled’s photos tend to be stunning, and the reality is that the place looks like the photos and it’s not overrated. The atmosphere of the lake, the tranquillity, and the beauty of the nature, make this place a perfect destination for couples or families.

The Basics of Lake Bled region
When to go | Summer: good weather (if you’re brave, you can swim in the lake) + more crowded + higher prices Spring and Autumn: low season + probability of rain Winter: low season (except Christmas) + cold + snow! Note: we went in July and the thermic feeling was fresh but nice |
How to get there | By car from the capital Ljibliana (45 min) or directly from the international airport (30 min) |
Don’t forget | Camera, comfy shoes for hiking/walking |
Cost | It’s one of the most touristic places of the country, and accommodations know it. |
Bled’s life revolves around the lake. The majority of the houses and hotels are around the east side of the lake and the same for restaurants. Bled is a small cozy town that offers a perfect plan for a weekend or for 2-3 days in a travel itinerary.
We did this stop in combination with Ljubljana, as a complement of our long road trip in Croatia. Our best advice is to enjoy the majesty of the lake while spending some days relaxing and trying good food. Of course, the area offers other alternatives in addition to the lake, so take note of the following tips.
Surroundings and views of Lake Bled
The lake itself has a circular path, which offers you more than 90 minutes of walking and many views of the lake. In the middle of the lake there is the Church of the Assumption of Maria, a Baroque-style church from the 15th century that conducts weddings. It is accessible by boat and it is the icing on the cake of the panoramic views.
Walk to Bled Castle
In addition to the central church, there is an always visible castle. The entrance is (in our opinion) expensive, €13 adults – €5 children, but the views from the top are breathtaking. The entrance also gives you access to different museum-rooms with history about the castle and the area.

Visit Vintgar Gorge
A 10-minute drive from Bled, will take you to Vintgar Gorge, a gift from mother Nature. The water carved a path in the rocks, which today presents a good plan for a short hike. In around 2 hours, you can do a circular path while enjoying the blue water along the way. Parking fees are €5 and the entrance is €10. May be crowded on weekends.
Row in the lake, or skate!
In the lake, there are lots of boats, rowing boats, for couples, for groups, for sports… You can get a boat for some hours (recommended if you are willing to sweat) or pay a round trip in a group. Normally the boats go to the church and come back. Something amazing would be a boat tour with cheese and wine… pretty sure they exist! Also, if you visit Bled in Winter and you’re lucky, you may find the lake frozen and you’ll be able to ice skate on it.
Hiking at Lake Bled in Slovenia
Another option to enjoy the surrounding area of the lake is to do a 1-4 hour hike. We encourage you to check other blogs with a dedicated post about hike, since we didn’t do one due to a lack of time. The most visited is the Ojstrica hike, which offers a really good viewpoint of the lake.
We strongly recommend a visit to this natural masterpiece. If you visit Slovenia, Ljubljana, or even Croatia, don’t miss the opportunity to see this lovely town. I hope we could visit it again!
